Smoke was reported Wednesday night, July 5 on the south side of Healy Spur Road, near the Healy River. Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) responded and discovered a 10 acre coal seam fire burning in an old fire scar east of Healy.

DOF personnel are on scene, monitoring the fire and completing a structure assessment.  Strategies will be developed to keep the fire west of Cripple Creek, south of Healy Creek, and east of Dora Creek.  Because of the hazards associated with the burning coal, indirect methods will be used and helicopter bucket drops may be utilized to keep the fire with in historic burn scars.

The public in Healy and surrounding areas can expect to see smoke from the coal seam fire and increased aviation activity.
