A fire was reported near the junction of Eielson Farm Road and Old Valdez Trail just before noon Sunday, May 25. North Star Volunteer Fire Department along with North Pole Fire Department and Division of Forestry firefighting crews responded to find 1 to 1.5 acre fire burning in black spruce and mixed hardwoods. A home was imminently threatened and retardant was requested.
The retardant plane made two drops, slowing the advance of the fire. Crews knocked down the flames and contained it with the help of a helicopter making bucket drops.
It has been determined that a tree on a power line started the fire. Crews remain on the fire mopping up, but the fire is contained.
