The US National Weather Service Alaska issued a Red Flag Warning, effective from 4:00pm to 10:00pm Thursday, May 18 in the Matanuska Valley, southern Susitna Valley, and Copper River Basin.

An upper-level ridge will remain over Southcentral Alaska through Friday morning, allowing for warm and dry conditions across the region. Daytime highs today will approach 70 degrees across the Matanuska Valley, southern Susitna Valley, and the Copper River Basin. Relative humidity (RH) values today will also drop to between 20% and 30% as northerly winds increase later this afternoon and continue through early Friday morning. Overnight RH recoveries Thursday nigh will only reach the 60-70% range due to light northerly winds through Friday morning.
Please be careful during your outdoor activities. Whether you’re recreating or working, this warning means new fire starts could lead to the development of large and dangerous wildfires in these areas.
