Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is responding to two new lightning caused fires in the Interior

Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) is responding to two new lightning caused fires. Multiple callers reported a new fire near the Teklanika River, about 12.5 miles southwest of Nenana. DOF has dispatched Fire Bosses, Tanker 524 and ariel supervision to the Teklanika River Fire (#257) to begin initial attack operations on the estimated 250-acre fire. DOF firefighters are responding, and additional crews have been ordered. Recreational cabins and homes along the Teklanika are just over a mile away from the growing fire. The community of Anderson is across the Nenana River, about six miles southwest of the fire.

The Sand Creek Fire (#261) is on the north side of the Tanana River, about 6.5 miles northwest of Dot Lake and is estimated to be 10 acres. Helitack has deployed its crew and has been joined by an additional helicopter, both are conducting bucket drops while the helitack crew constructs landing zones for additional responding resources. Recreational cabins and homes west of the fire along Sand Lake and Native Allotments southeast of the fire are not immediately threatened.
