Fire activity picked up on the Mount Hayes Fire (#299) burning along the Gerstle River, six miles south of Mile 1393 Alaska Highway. Southerly Chinook winds started in the afternoon, pushing Interior fires into fresh fuels. Ash fallout has been reported along the highway and from residents on Barley Way. Aerial reconnaissance was made late afternoon to inform fire managers who are monitoring the fire. Plans are in place for when the fire advances to certain points to engage.
Motorists on the Alaska Highway, or any roadway, should not drive into dense smoke. Do not stop on the highway. Turn around before visibility is compromised and return to a safe area, clear of the roadway. Please drive safely with our headlights on.
