Welcome rain moderates fire activity along Canadian border

The fires along the Top of the World Highway received measurable rainfall Tuesday night.

About three dozen people are assigned to the three fires: 18 smokejumpers, a hand crew, and a helicopter with crew.

The Wood Fire (#330) was reported last Thursday, August 3, burning about 4.5 miles northwest of the Poker Creek Port of Entry. Updated mapping puts the fire at 1,164 acres. Firefighters have been working to protect structures in the area of the fire.

A fire to the northwest of the Wood Fire has remained small, at less than 3 acres.

Smokejumpers are reinforcing a control line around the perimeter of the Jejezhuu Fire (#346). Itwas spotted on Sunday, August 6.

Another group of smokejumpers was sent out Monday, August 7, to a third fire in the same area. The Napoleon Fire (#348) is about 7.5 miles northeast of Chicken. Firefighters are continuing their efforts to identify values at risk as they monitor fire activity. The fire size is being reported at 414 acres after new mapping.

The Alaska Fire Service is currently staffing one additional fire. The Tsyooktuihvun Fire (#345) is located a little over 25 miles due north of Venetie. Smokejumpers and the Cascade Wildland Fire Module are working to increase the depth of the control line around the 8-acre fire. They hope to complete their efforts over the weekend.

There were no new fires reported as of 6 p.m. Wednesday on lands under the protection of the BLM Alaska Fire Service.
