Firefighters put small boundary fire into monitor status

Firefighters have wrapped up work on the Jejezhuu Fire (#346), one of three fires located near the U.S.-Canadian border north of the Top of the World Highway.

The North Star Crew joined the smokejumpers assigned to the fire on Wednesday in order to expedite control efforts. The fire, under 3 acres in size, has been placed in monitor status. The smokejumpers have been released and are making their way back to Fort Wainwright.

The North Stars returned to work on the Wood Fire (#330) Thursday. They cleared snags and hazard trees from along the narrow road which parallels Canyon Creek. This will provide for a greater degree of safety for residents traveling the route. The eight smokejumpers enhanced structure protection preparations for the handful of cabins and residences in the area of the 1,164 acre fire.  For the second day in a row, fire activity was described as moderate.

Very little smoke was observed Thursday above the 414 acre Napoleon Fire (#348).  Smokejumpers are continuing reconnaissance efforts to ensure they have identified sites that may need protection should fire activity increase.

Work is progressing on pace on the Tsyooktuihvun Fire (#345) north of Venetie.

Firefighters expect to complete suppression efforts and to be released from the fire on Sunday.

For the second day in a row, there were no new fires reported as of 5 p.m. Thursday on lands under the protection of the BLM Alaska Fire Service.
