Fire north of Venetie controlled

Firefighters declared the Tsyooktuihvun Fire (#345) controlled Sunday. The 8-acre fire north of Venetie was placed in monitor status. The last of the equipment, smokejumpers and firefighters were flown by helicopter to Fort Yukon and transferred to a plane for the trip back to Fort Wainwright. The members of the Cascade Wildland Fire Module will return home to Idaho.

Firefighters remain assigned to the Wood Fire (#330) which is burning near the U.S.-Canada border north of the Top of the World Highway and the Napoleon Fire (#348) northeast of Chicken. Neither fire has experienced any significant activity or growth for several days. The remaining smokejumpers and firefighters on duty on these two fires remain vigilant, prepared to respond to any change in the situation. 

There was one new fire start reported Sunday afternoon on lands protected by the BLM Alaska Fire Service. The Uncle Sam Fire (#358) was estimated at a half-acre in size. It is located about 3.5 miles southwest of Tolovana Hot Springs.
