“Backhaul” of supplies, mop up on McCoy Creek Fire (#201)

Saturday, firefighters continued to “backhaul” supplies off the McCoy Creek Fire, and mop up around structures. Over the next several days, crews will demobilize as their 14-day work periods come to an end. A smaller number of resources will remain on the fire until the weather significantly shifts and fire managers can safely decide that the McCoy Creek Fire no longer presents a threat.

With their remaining time on the McCoy Creek Fire, crews will continue to mop up hot spots 300 feet within the fire perimeter, and work to remove the firefighting equipment used to protect the structures along the Salcha River. Firefighters remaining on the fire include the Union Interagency Hotshot Crew, the North Pacific Handcrew, the White Mountain Handcrew, and the West Coast Handcrew.

EVACUATIONS: The Lower Salcha River, approximately from river mile 3 to 40, is in Set status. The Middle Salcha, approximately river mile 40 to 61, remains in a Ready status.

CLOSURES: The Salcha River Recreation Area remains closed to the public to give firefighters the space they need to do their jobs safely. Property owners can still access the river at the boat ramp but should be aware this is still an active fire area and in evacuation status. Please use caution and be aware of increased boat traffic in the area between river miles 20-30. In addition, the Harding Lake Campground is closed, but the boat ramp for Harding Lake remains open to the public. Fire managers and Alaska State Parks are working on a date to open areas that remain closed.
