An air quality advisory was issued on Thursday for an increase in smoke due to an uptick in fire activity across Central and Eastern Alaska. Communities within the region close to the fire areas will continue to be impacted by smoke until the weather patterns change and reduce fire activity. Wetting rains and thunderstorms are forecast over the next few days throughout the region which will bring relief to the firefighters and clear skies to those areas currently impacted by the advisory.
The McDonald Fire, approximately 3 miles east of Salcha, continues to be an active smoke producer with the fire activity currently seen within the fire perimeter. Communities near the fire will continue to be impacted during the evening hours as smoke will have the tendency to settle to the lower elevations within those communities until the weather patterns change. In addition, fires near Circle, the Canadian Border and McGrath will continue to impact the air quality in those areas as well with the increase in multiple fires seen across the region. The highlighted areas on the map below illustrate the areas that may be impacted by smoke as fire activity increases throughout the day. This advisory is in effect until Sunday, June 23 at 2:00 pm.
