Containment reached 75% on Deception Pup (#252) and 90% on Flasco (#259) fires Sunday. There is over 3.5 miles of hose deployed on the Deception Pup Fire, and close to 2.25 miles on the Flasco Fire. Where possible, firefighters are bringing out supplies that aren’t needed. These supplies will then be refurbished and available for other fires in Alaska.

Operations personnel were able to conduct reconnaissance flights of all the fires in the management group to confirm full suppression and monitoring goals were being met.

Some of the fires managed by the team are burning what is called a limited management option area. This option level is a pre-determined response for fire and allows wildfires to play its natural ecological role unless it threatens property or people. If it endangers a valuable site and people, firefighters may mobilize to protect the sites without stopping the wildfire’s spread.

This strategy prioritizes firefighter safety, values at risk, and the impact on the surrounding area. This also allows other firefighting resources to remain available to respond to a new fire start that could immediately threaten people and property like the Deception Pup and Flasco fires did to nearby Central and Circle These two fires generated a swift response to ensure the safety of the people living in the area and to protect nearby properties.

The boreal ecosystem that dominates the Interior depends on fire for its natural succession. It’s not a matter of if, but when a fire will occur. We all need to be prepared. Homeowners can take effective measures to protect their homes and property by adopting  Firewise principles.

There is a total of 78 personnel assigned to the fires.
