Two wildfires are burning within Katmai National Park & Preserve at American Creek and Naknek Lake. Regular monitoring reveals that neither fire is growing significantly or posing an immediate threat to life or property.
The American Creek fire (#143) is 4,650 acres in size and burning mixed spruce and tundra in the hills south of Nonvianuk Lake and north of Lake Coville near American Creek.
The Naknek Lake fire (#146) is 26 acres and burning mixed spruce nine miles west of Dumpling Mountain and two miles south of the Naknek Lake.
Both fires are being monitored by a team of wildland firefighters. As a precaution in case conditions change, they completed assessments or point protection for several cabins and lodges in the vicinity of the fire. Fire managers will continue to monitor the fire closely, allowing the fire to serve its natural role on the landscape while taking advantage of geographic barriers and areas of reduced vegetation which will continue to minimize fire growth. The fires were detected on June 16, 2024, and were likely caused by lightning.
