
As of noon Saturday, there were 150 active wildfires statewide with two new starts in the past 24 hours. So far, 332 fires have burned 589,088 acres across Alaska. Brief updates are provided for Saturday’s staffed fires within the BLM Alaska Fire Service protection area.
Deep (#213) – A recon flight on Friday showed minimal fire activity with creeping and smoldering. The smoke that was visible Friday was coming from Deep Creek, well inside the fire’s perimeter.
On Saturday, crews continued to work on community protection projects, which should be wrapped up by end of shift. Firefighters are nearly finished with backhaul operations, removing equipment and supplies that are no longer needed along contingency lines. The eight people assigned to the fire are scheduled to demobilize on Sunday.
The Deep Fire is 6 miles southwest of the Lake Minchumina community. It is estimated at 22,346 acres and has not grown outside its established footprint.
Main (#240) – Firefighters have completed more than a mile and a half of fire breaks around allotments near Boston Dome. Fire breaks have also been constructed around Ruby.
On Saturday, crews were focused on securing the fire’s western edge and making sure hotspots are being extinguished to protect a pair of allotments. The fire is 7 miles southwest of Ruby. It is 24,537 acres and has 54 people assigned.
