Final update: Crews continue full suppression efforts on T’eedriinjik Fire near Venetie

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Crews are working to secure the edges and extinguish hot spots deeper in the interior today as they strive to fully suppress the T’eedriinjik Fire (#380) burning northwest of Venetie. They expect to spend the rest of the week extinguishing the remaining hot spots on this 22-acre fire.

The T’eedriinjik Fire began on July 21 as a spotty 5-acre fire burning near a trail leading to Venetie. On Wednesday, a new fire flared up outside the main perimeter and exhibited extreme fire behavior, consuming an additional 15.7 acres.

Edited to correct containment amount. The original portion of the fire is 100% contained while the 15.7-acre section is 25%. Firefighters are going deeper within the perimeter every day while mopping up hotspots

A few light rain showers fell in the area on Saturday and Sunday morning but will subside later today. The sun may even reemerge briefly. Despite this, temperatures will remain around 60 degrees with moderately high humidity levels. On Monday, the fire is expected to be clipped by a front from the south that could bring wetting rains.

The BLM Alaska Fire Service North Star Crew, a Type 2 training crew, and the Clear Water Crew, a Type 2 contract crew with firefighters from the St. Mary’s region, along with other BLM AFS firefighters, will also address fire-weakened trees and spruce trees with shallow roots that could topple in the gusty winds.

This will be the last update unless there are significant changes.
