As Alaska’s wildfire season concludes on August 31st, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Alaskans for helping us successfully navigate another season. Starting September 1st, burn permits will no longer be required until the fire season resumes on April 1st, 2025. Even though permits aren’t needed during this time, it’s still important to exercise caution. Always attend your fire, ensure it’s in a safe location, and never leave before it is fully extinguished.
For hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, please take extra care when traveling through burn scars or recently burned areas. Campfires can smolder in the duff layer and ignite later, even smoldering underground through the winter. Always make sure your campfire is completely out before leaving.

Please note that some local jurisdictions may have different rules for permitting and timelines than the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, so be sure to check your local laws. If you have any questions about burning, feel free to contact your local fire department or Division of Forestry & Fire Protection office.
Let’s stay safe this fall and winter as we prepare for next year.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and commitment to fire safety in Alaska!
