Fish Creek Fire off the Steese Highway is now in monitor status

Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) Fairbanks #1 Type 2 Crew had overnighted near the Fish Creek Fire (#174), a lighting caused fire Tuesday afternoon located about 2.25 miles east of Mile 25 Steese Highway, north of Kinross Gold Mine. On Wednesday the crew cut a sawline around the .1-acre fire. They extinguished hotspots as they mopped up the burned area. The crew discovered no heat after cold trailing the fire and gridding the surrounding unburned area. The fire has been called contained, controlled and will be placed in monitor status.

A drone module was requested to the fire Wednesday and conducted an aerial survey of the surrounding area to ensure there were no smoldering holdover fires from Tuesday’s lightning storms. The Fish Creek Fire and the Chatanika Valley along the Steese Highway will continue to be monitored for any possible flare ups.

This will be the last update on this fire unless there is significant activity.
