Current fire and fireworks restrictions this 4th of July weekend

Restrictions affecting fireworks, burning, and other fires are in place in many places across the state due to an increase in fire activity in Interior Alaska and the relocation of firefighting resources. These restrictions are especially important to help ensure a safe holiday weekend for the public and emergency responders. Please be extremely careful with anything that could cause a spark and reduce the number of human-caused fires.

Campfire restrictions

Bureau of Land Management: These restrictions have all been rescinded (UPDATED July 18, 2025).

The Fairbanks District Office and Anchorage District Office issued fire prevention orders for the Eastern Interior Field Office (Steese/White Mtns. and Fortymile areas), Anchorage Field Office, and Glennallen Field Office (click on links for district maps).

Denali National Park This restriction has been rescinded (UPDATED July 18, 2025).

  • Open wood fires are currently prohibited in Denali National Park and Preserve.  “Open fires” refers to any flame source not immediately extinguishable or controllable and applies to any form of wood fire, even in established fire rings.

State of Alaska restrictions

UPDATE on July 18, 2025: The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) has lifted burn permit suspensions for all areas except Tok, where sustained high fire danger remains. As of July 16, burn permits are valid for the Mat-Su, Kenai-Kodiak, Copper River, Southwest, Fairbanks, and Delta areas. This decision reflects improved weather conditions and the return of firefighting resources to local areas, resulting in moderated fire danger in much of the state.

  • Temporary burn suspensions are in place in multiple areas of Alaska. This means no open debris burning or use of burn barrels (fires that already require burn permits). Burn suspensions do NOT restrict the use of fires on private or State of Alaska land for cooking, warming, and signaling fires as long as the fires are less than 3 feet in diameter.
  • Burn Suspensions are currently in place for the Anchorage Mat-Su Area and the Fairbanks Area. These suspensions are evaluated on a daily basis; check with your local Division of Forestry & Fire Protection Area Office: dnr.alaska.gov/burn
  • Remember that State laws and regulations pertaining to burning practices apply statewide year-round.

Fireworks and other explosives

  • No fireworks, explosives, or pyrotechnic device of any kind may be discharged anywhere on National Forests or National Park Service lands, regardless of weather conditions or holidays, at any time of the year.
