Steady progress on Nelchina Glacier Fire as suppression repair planning begins

Fire crews on the Nelchina Glacier Fire (#226) located just 3 miles south of the Eureka Roadhouse Fire (#226) continue to make steady progress, working towards completion of mop up operations along the north edge of the fire. Crews are pushing closer to the 100-foot mop up objective on the east and west flanks of the fire. Crews are removing heat from the fires edge to reduce any risk of flare ups. Multiple loads of hose and equipment were backhauled to staging, and the Chugachmiut Denali Module was successfully demobilized and sent home.

A Resource Advisor (READ) is now actively involved in planning suppression repair efforts. As fire activity winds down, the READ plays a key role in assessing the fire area and recommending actions that protect natural and cultural resources. Suppression repair includes activities like soil stabilization and rehabilitating dozer lines to prevent erosion.

Today crews will continue mopup and snagging along the north edge of the fire and backhaul any remaining equipment.

Burn permit suspension reminder:

A burn suspension remains in effect for all of Matsu, Copper River, Kenai-Kodiak areas. These suspensions are in place to prevent human caused fires that could pull resources away from large ongoing fires.
