Burn Permit Suspensions Lifted for Kenai, Kodiak, and Mat-Su Areas

Due to moderated fire behavior in the interior and the redistribution of firefighting resources to local areas, along with weather conditions, the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection has lifted the burn suspension in the Kenai, Kodiak, and Mat-Su areas. As of Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, these burn suspensions are no longer in effect.

While the burn suspension is being lifted, there are still active fires in the interior of the state. Human-caused fires are the majority of the fires in the state of Alaska. Safe burning is a priority, and proper burning practices are still required.

All open burning and other burning covered under large and small burn permits is now authorized. Please follow the burn permit regulations, such as having water on site, burning only natural materials, having ground cleared to mineral soil around the burn, and staying with the fire until it is completely out and cold to the touch.

Permits can be obtained online and at local fire departments. For any assistance in obtaining a permit, or if you have any questions regarding burning, please call the Division of Forestry’s local office.

The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection evaluates weather and fuel conditions daily to determine fire danger. Please call the local area Burn Permit Hotline, which will be updated with details on wind advisories, burn suspensions, or burn closures.

Burn permit information can be found at dnr.alaska.gov/burn/fireareas.
