The excavators are still working the 35-40 miles of dozer line and heading towards Glacier Creek near the Elliot Highway as weather allows.
Suppression repair for firelines takes on unique challenges due to the state’s specific environment. The process is a vital post-wildfire activity that focuses on restoring the landscape and mitigating the damage caused by firefighting efforts. A major concern is the impact of heavy equipment on permafrost, which can be easily disturbed. Therefore, in these areas, repairs are often postponed until the ground freezes in winter to prevent further damage and erosion, leading to the repairs having an extended timeline. The areas that do not have permafrost are the priority to complete before the ground freezes.
Additionally, crews work to prevent unauthorized access to firelines, which could be mistaken for trails, by replacing the natural vegetation to promote the area to have regrowth next year.

There is still fire traffic on the Elliot Highway by Olnes Pond and Whitefish Campground. This includes trucks and heavy equipment on trailers. These vehicles are often slow, oversized, and might turn onto the road in unexpected places.
Please drive carefully and mind your speed for public and firefighter safety.
Weather: Today will be a high of 66°F with a chance of light rain during the day. The night will be cloudy with a low of 54°F.
Closures: No closures in effect for the Himalaya Road and Aggie Creek fires currently. Olnes Pond and Whitefish Campground have been reopened to the public.
Evacuations: Level 1 “READY,” evacuations are still in effect. Level 1indicates that a fire is present in the area and to prepare for potential evacuation. Visit https://bit.ly/FNSBevac for current evacuation levels.
