Tok, Alaska- On the afternoon of Friday, September 5, firefighters at the Pumpstation Lookout spotted smoke. It was quickly identified as a local homeowner starting their woodstove. As the weather gets cooler, it’s common to see smoke from woodstoves, but our lookouts and patrolling engines will remain vigilant and investigate all visible smoke.
Crews are still working on the 7 Mile Lookout Fire. On Friday, September 5, firefighters cleaned up areas along the historic Eagle Trail and 7 Mile Lookout Road. They are removing flammable materials to reduce future fire risk and make the area safe for public use. The public should expect to see smoke in this area as crews are safely burning brush piles. Another crew from Alaska is scheduled to arrive in a few days to help with this ongoing work.

Fire investigators have conducted interviews and are continuing to work on their report regarding a recent string of human-caused fires. If you plan to burn, please call your local forestry office with your address so they are aware to expect smoke. Always consider weather conditions carefully before you start.
