Steese Highway remains open through Bolgen Creek Fire

May 18, 2015, 2:30 p.m. Firefighting crews continue building saw and retardant lines around the Bolgen Creek Fire burning north of Fairbanks along the Steese Highway. The fire, near milepost 148, is burning on both sides of the road but the highway remains open.

Crews are working on site protection of structures and allotments in the area. The fire, reported Saturday, is between Central and Circle, east of Birch Creek. Better mapping on Sunday reduced the reported acreage to 535.5 acres. There was little growth on Sunday. Retardant tankers and helicopters making bucket drops were able to catch the fire where it escaped containment lines.

Three Alaska Type 2 crews are arriving on the fire Monday bringing the assigned number of personnel to nearly 200. The Interior remains under a Red Flag Warning for low relative humidities and high winds. The forecast is calling for the warm, dry days to continue through the week.

Crews are mopping up along the highway corridor keeping the road open. Motorists are advised to use caution and keep an eye out for firefighters and firefighting equipment on the road.
