This fire is being managed by the Great Basin Incident Command Team 3, Mark Rosenthal, Incident Commander (IC). Resources have started to come in and are being deployed.
There was moderate fire behavior today with smoldering, surface burning and occasional torching in black spruce. Extensive areas along the fire perimeter and within the interior contain heat and continue to burn actively. Weather has moderated reducing the rate of fire spread.
Thick smoke continues to be an issue. Visibility along the Elliot Highway is very low and poses a real threat to motorists. Please slow down and watch out for fire personnel.
The Hayes fire has been added to the team’s suppression responsibilities and two crews hit it hard in an attempt to put it in monitor status. They are very close to accomplishing that.
There will be an open house at the Incident Command Post (ICP) located at the Ken Kundel Community Center,2645 Goldstream, Fairbanks, AK and all are welcome.
The Alyeska Trans-Alaska Pipeline, fiber optic cable and the Elliot Highway between mile markers 33 and 34.
Threatened Structures: 28 single residences, 24 other minor structures – No evacuations at this time.
Damaged or Destroyed Structures: None, at this time.
Closures: There is a Temporary Closure Order for the Western Portion of the White Mountains National Recreation Area (see separate Closure Notice).
