Firefighters continue work on the Ninetyeight Creek Fire northwest of Salcha River

Smokejumpers continue to fight a 40-acre fire northwest of the Salcha River. The Ninetyeight Creek Fire (#391) was started by lightning yesterday and is burning in black spruce.  It’s located  just within the Yukon Training Area, about a mile and a half from the creek and three miles northeast of where Ninetyeight Creek meets the Salcha River. The BLM Alaska Fire Service attacked the fire aggressively last night with water-scooping aircraft, a retardant tanker, and 18 smokejumpers. Firefighters are starting to construct a saw line around the fire ad anticipating additional resources today  to attack the fire directly. The fire is about two miles from the nearest structure. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in effect for the area over the Ninetyeight Creek Fire. For more information, contact the Alaska Interagency Fire Information Office at (907)356-5511.
