A Change in Management:  The 1,318 acre Deshka Landing Fire, which started on August 17 five miles south west of Willow, Alaska remains at 95 percent containment.  Today (Monday) at 4:00 p.m. management of the fire will be turned over to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry’s Mat-Su Area Forestry Office.

 “It has been a pleasure for Team 10 to provide our assistance in the control and management of this fire,” said Incident Commander Alan Lawson. “When we arrived, we were immediately able to pick up on the excellent work that the smoke jumpers, Alaska Fire Service, and the Tanana Chiefs and Gannett Glacier crews were able to accomplish before our arrival. The local agencies and the communities impacted by this fire have been very gracious to us and helped in our success as well. Again, a special thanks to the Big Lake Lions Club for making the Big Lake Recreation Center available as our Incident Command Post.”

Weather:  Periods of showers are forecast over the fire area for the rest of the week.

Open Burning:  Due to significant rainfall Saturday, the burn permit suspension that has been in effect for the Matanuska-Susitina Valley was lifted at noon on Sunday, September 8. Open debris burning and the use of burn barrels are allowed with an Alaska Division of Forestry burn permit.

Closures:  Portions of Game Management Unit 14A and State lands in the area remain closed to public access. Current information about the closures can be found by calling the Alaska Interagency Wildfire Information Office at:  907-356-5511.

The western portion of the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area remains closed to recreation and hunting. For current closure information, please call the Mat-Su Area Park Office at:  (907) 745-3975.
