Recent weather conditions continue to provide opportunities for firefighters to obtain further completion of structure and allotment protection on the Slathtouka (#431) & Mission (#566) fires.
Slathtouka Fire (#431): located approximately 18 miles southwest of Alatna and Allakaket on the east side of the Koyukuk River and about 6 miles below the confluence of the Koyukuk and Kanuti (Old Man River) rivers. The fire remains at 9,927 acres, with no change in fire growth within the last week. As allotment protection progresses to 69% completion, firefighters are focused on securing fire breaks on the south side of Allakaket and removing unneeded supplies and equipment on the northern edge of the fire in the Koyukuk River area. Once aircraft are finished with equipment removal, efforts will shift toward monitoring other fire areas.
The Mission Fire (#566): located roughly 7 miles northwest of Tanana. air tankers were able to help secure previously constructed fireline by lining with retardant Thursday. Firefighters continue securing the fireline edge and extinguishing hotspots within the fire perimeter, where detected. Firefighters will continue these efforts until structure and allotment protection objectives are met.
