Fire
There are 151 active fires across the State. The following large fires are likely to affect air quality in the Outlook area over the coming days: Anderson Complex, Lost Horse Creek, McCoy, Pogo Mine, and Delta. Additional details on fires are available at AICC Fire Info. Any community adjacent to active fire may experience periods of degraded air quality so stay informed by visiting the Fire and Smoke Map.
Smoke
Smoke production over the last 48 hours has been significant to say the least and we’ve seen smoke from Interior fires, driven by Chinook winds, transported to the North Slope and beyond. Those winds will decrease today as chances for precipitation and afternoon wet thunderstorms increase for most of the interior. Dense heavy concentrations of smoke settled in the Tanana River Valley again last night. Hazardous to Very Unhealthy air quality is likely in the AM for Fairbanks and North Pole, with overall Very Unhealthy to Unhealthy conditions expected for most of the day. Locations to the southeast, Delta Junction and Tok, will see scouring winds decrease and likely more lingering smoke. Nenana is beginning to see heavier impacts from the Shores Landing Fire. Unhealthy conditions are likely there in the AM, with slight improvement in the afternoon. Healy and areas south, including visitors to Denali should enjoy good air quality.
