The smokejumpers assigned to the two fires burning near the border with Canada conducted aerial reconnaissance on Monday.

The Wood Fire (#330) is about 4.5 miles northwest of the Poker Creek Port of Entry, while the Napoleon Fire (#348) is located about 7.5 miles northeast of Chicken. Both are north of the Top of the World Highway.

Monday’s helicopter overflight confirmed that while both are producing smoke at times, neither fire is exhibiting significant activity or growth. Firefighters tested pumps and hoses to ensure structure protection efforts around the Wood Fire could be implemented if needed.
The latest estimated size of the Wood Fire is 1,164 acres, with the Napoleon Fire now estimated at 821 acres.
A new, but inactive, fire was discovered Monday on lands under the protection of the BLM Alaska Fire Service. The Pingo Fire (#360) has burned about 4 acres of black spruce about 60 miles north-northwest of Eagle.
