
Multiple fire areas received precipitation on Wednesday and minimal fire behavior was observed yesterday. The Mosquito Creek Fire (#290) near Harding Lake was called out. No return to hot and dry weather in the foreseeable future is forecasted by meteorologists. 932 firefighters and personnel remain in the field and continue working to secure line, mop up and cold trail edges, work on suppression repair, and back haul equipment that is no longer needed in the field due to reduced threat. There are currently 8 staffed fires and 297,140 acres have burned statewide. This will be the last statewide daily update and a weekly update will begin on Monday, August 21. Daily updates on individual fires or complexes in Alaska will continue as activity demands.
HIGHLIGHTED FIRE ACTIVITY
Lost Horse Creek (#296) – [9,505 acres | 69% completed] North of Old Murphy Dome Road, 3.5 miles east of Mile 18 Elliot Highway. The east and south portions of the fire are being gridded for hot spots. Further containment effort on the southwest corner of the fire is required and will continue for several more days. Repair work of contingency dozer line has also begun. The Fairbanks North Star Borough moved all areas to a Level 1 “Ready” level. (340 Personnel)
Anderson Complex (#899) – [58,933 acres | 87% completed] Anderson-Clear area. Threat to values at risk remains but is reduced. Resources continue to secure hot spots and the fire edge around structures and continue to secure line around allotments. Suppression Repair has begun and will continue through the week. The fire will transition back to the local unit on August 20, 2023. (177 personnel)
McCoy Creek (#201) – [14,060 acres] River mile 29, Salcha River. Crews are beginning to backhaul excess equipment that are no longer needed to protect structures due to reduced threat. They continue mopping up, cold trailing, and securing 50-100ft around the north edge near the Salcha River.The Fairbanks North Star Borough looks to reduce evacuation levels along the Salcha River later today. Pogo Mine Road (#191) – [48,745 acres] 9 miles down Pogo Road. There was minimal fire behavior observed yesterday. Crews continue direct line construction and mop up around structures. (106 personnel)
Sand Lake (#261) – [130 acres | 50% completed] 6 miles northwest of Dot Lake. The Gannet Glacier Crew from Palmer, Alaska was inserted today. Crews were able to reinforce line and mop up 150’ in along division Alpha. (64 personnel)
Mount Hayes (#299) – [7,085 acres] 24 miles southeast of Delta Junction. Minimal fire behavior was observed on Thursday. Crews continue working to implement structure protection on remote Alaska State Parks public use cabins. (90 personnel)
Mosquito Creek (#290) – [39 acres | 100% completed] 5 miles east of Harding Lake. All resources have been released from the fire and it was called out on Thursday evening.
