Firefighters respond to new fire near Gaines Creek Mine

A quick response by Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) helitack and aircraft helped keep the Ganes Creek Fire (#151) in check. This new wildfire started approximately 15 miles west of Takotna near Gaines Creek Mine on Monday, June 16 at 8:00 PM. McGrath Helitack dropped off firefighters to secure the fire perimeter and utilized their helicopter for bucket work.

Air attack and a retardant tanker responded to the incident, supporting the initial attack effort with a load of retardant to help box in the fire. This wildfire is in a full-suppression management area and is currently staffed by DOF firefighters who remained overnight on the incident. The current size is estimated to be four acres. The cause is undetermined.
