Fire updates across southwest Alaska

Telidaside Fire (#137) Firefighters have completed point protection objectives for values at risk in the area. This strategy involves placing sprinkler systems and water pumps near cabins or homes so they can quickly be activated if the fire approaches due to an increase in fire activity, minimizing damage while minimizing personnel on site.

Ganes Creek Fire (#151) The Ganes Creek Fire, which was reported on Tuesday, has now been declared contained and out. A helitack crew remained overnight earlier in the week to secure the perimeter after an initial retardant drop helped slow the spread of the fire and allowed helitack to secure the perimeter over the past 48 hours.

Little Selatna Fire (#170) Located near Little Selatna Creek, this fire is priority in the area for assessment of potential action. It is burning in a full protection area which means firefighters will take prompt action to suppress the fire and protect nearby values.

Wabash Fire (#186) Located approximately 22 miles north of McGrath, the Wabash Fire was detected Wednesday afternoon. Southwest Area Helitack is working to contain the fire. The Helitack crew utilized helicopter bucket operations to drop water and secure the fires edge last night. The Helitack crew will be working to contain the fire today

Meadows Creek Fire (#187) Also discovered Wednesday about 10 miles east of the Nowitna River, this five-acre fire is burning in a limited protection area meaning that fire managers allow this fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem unless it threatens identified values. It will continue to be monitored by air.
