Coordinated response underway as firefighters address wildfires in Western Alaska

With more than 30 active fires across an area the size of Montana, BLM AFS Galena Zone fire managers have been successful prioritizing limited resources to protect important sites where there’s the greatest risk and best chance of success.

Slightly cooler weather has helped moderate fire behavior across the Zone, giving smokejumpers on various incidents a window to secure fire edges on smaller fires and begin structure protection work at high-priority sites.

Firefighters are also getting support from multi-engine water scoopers and helicopters as needed. So far, none are immediately threatening communities.

At the top of the priority list is the Roundabout Complex outside Huslia, now consisting of five fires after two fires merged Saturday.

  • Moldy Fire (#279): The largest in the complex, estimated at more than 8,000 acres, is located nearly 13 miles southwest of Huslia. It has merged with the Louie Fire (#277).
  • Richards Fire (#251): Approximately 800 acres, located 10 miles west of Huslia is considered 20% contained. (This information was updated at 11 a.m. Monday)
  • Billy Hawk Fire (#182) and Billy Hawk 2 Fire (#191): These two fires are located more than 25 miles northwest of Huslia. Both were contained by smokejumpers and moved to higher priority fires – four went to the Caribou Fire and four went to a fire near Ruby.
  • Caribou Fire (#128): Estimated at 1,123 acres and burning about 36 miles northeast of Huslia. Four smokejumpers responded due to extreme fire danger near a mine site and are doing structure assessment and point protection.

Other fires of interest:

Tagoomenik (#283) – Twelve smokejumpers responded to a wildfire about 5 miles from Shaktoolik and successfully contained it. They demobilized on Saturday after completing their work.

Nakochelik (#306) – Eight smokejumpers and two water scoopers responded Saturday to a wildfire burning about 12 miles south of Ambler, successfully holding it at 143 acres. Eight smokejumpers are now securing the perimeter and mopping up remaining hotspots.
