With the help of cooler weather patterns and strong efforts from hand crews, containment has reached 60% on the Oskawalik Fire (#122), burning 9 miles south Crooked Creek in southwest Alaska.

No new fire growth was reported overnight. Crews, with help from air support, are actively securing the fires perimeter. Primary focus of operations is gridding for hot spots and working to attain a 50-foot buffer zone from the fire’s edge. Taking advantage of continued cooler, wetter weather forecast, crews will continue to work towards securing the fire’s perimeter and increasing containment.

Currently the fire poses no threat to public or structures however smoke make still be visible to residents in the area. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and will issue updates if conditions change.
