Clear skies bring increased fire activity to the Nenana Ridge Complex.
Fire activity on the Bonanza Creek (#238) and Goldstream Creek (#270) fires picked up Saturday leading to helicopter drops throughout the afternoon and evening.
Acreage on the Bonanza Creek Fire increased to 2,295 acres due to updated mapping and increased fire activity. The increase in fire activity allowed firefighters to find small spot fires around the fire which lead to direct suppression from aviation resources.
The Goldstream Creek Fire remains at 6,088 acres. Firefighters continue to set up protect structures on the southwest side of the fire and improve ATV trails for access and containment. Increased fire activity was observed on the Northern and Eastern sides of the fire.
Sunday’s weather will likely bring more fire activity throughout the Complex. Firefighters on both fires will continue extinguishing hot spots around the fire perimeter, and scouting for previously unknown spot fires.
These fires have impacted roadways and rail lines in the area. Please travel with caution and watch for fire crews as smoke may impact visibility.
