The Birch Lake Fire (#309) is currently burning southeast of Salcha and 4 miles northeast of Birch Lake. The fire is lightning caused, and recent mapping estimates it to be 73 acres. The fire is 20% contained.

Yesterday, the fire showed some increased activity but was contained to the interior of the fire. A repeater was successfully installed to improve communications among the crews. Today, crews will continue suppression efforts while engines and squads complete access points.
Helicopter transport operations are taking place in the area and crews are present in and around the Birch Lake boat launch. Please use caution when accessing the area.
Due to ongoing wildfire activity, Alaska State Parks has implemented several
closures and restrictions within the Northern Region. These measures are crucial
for public safety and to support ongoing firefighting efforts. At Birch Lake State Recreation Area, The following closures are in place:
- From the outhouse south, including the public use cabin, is closed to the public.
- The outhouse, the boat launch, and other parking remain open to the public at this time.
