Rainfall and cooler temperatures across the fire area yesterday allowed firefighters to make good progress on increasing containment to 85% while securing the fire line on the 1,779-acre Oskawalik Fire, 4 miles south of Crooked Creek. As the fire perimeter becomes more secure, the crews will shift their attention to the mop up process looking for any residual heat or potential threats to the secured line.
As crews continue to meet suppression objectives, they will begin to assemble gear no longer needed on the fire line and back haul the supplies to the Crooked Creek airstrip for demobilization. Once the equipment is removed from the fire line it will be inspected and repaired and placed back in the fire warehouse for other incidents at what time it will be deployed to meet the needs of the firefighters on the ground. One 20-person crew has reached the end of their fire assignment and will be replaced with another 20-person crew to continue suppression activities by the end of the day.
Fire activities may continue to be visible to the community of Crooked Creek as aviation assigned to the fire assists with the demobilization of crews and supplies to the Crooked Creek airstrip while boats assigned to the fire will continue to shuttle firefighters along the Kuskokwim River corridor as they patrol for hot spots and secure the fire line.
