Line around Otter Fire reinforced; Fortymile Fire 10% contained

Twelve smokejumpers and a helitack crew identified and worked to suppress any potential threats Tuesday to the containment line around the Otter Fire (#344). The fire is fully contained. Firefighters plan to remain in place through this week’s Red Flag conditions so they can take action if the fire begins to flare up.

A dozen smokejumpers are also working with the Cherokee Hotshots to contain the Fortymile Fire (#355). The 357-acre fire is burning near Fortymile Creek about 25 miles northwest of Beaver. It is 10% contained tonight.

Scooper planes made water drops today to help slow the fire’s spread as firefighters worked around the perimeter to identify hot spots and extinguish them.

The possibility for new fires or holdover fires to start will be high over the next few days as hot, dry weather settles into the Upper Yukon Zone. Daytime temperatures are forecast to be in the 80s with low relative humidity. Fires that start under these conditions could grow rapidly.
