Firefighters Advance on 7 Mile Lookout Fire with 50% Containment and Latest on Tok River Fire Efforts

7 Mile Lookout Fire (#222)

Size: 3,120 acres  Location: 7 miles southwest of Tok, AK.

Start Date: June 19, 2025 Cause: Lightning Containment: 50% Total Personnel: 140

Evacuation levels for neighborhoods near the 7 Mile Lookout Fire (#222): Residents north of Butch Kuth Ave and on Jack Wade Rd are at READY (Level 1). Residents on Butch Kuth Ave, Osprey, Moose Nugget, and Goshawk Rd are at SET (Level 2).

Today’s Activities – Firefighters including two type 2 Initial Attack (IA) crews from Alaska, have made substantial progress utilizing and improving dozer lines, bringing fire containment to 50%. They continue to reinforce the perimeter and secure key areas using heat detection maps generated by drone flights (unmanned aerial systems/UAS). Most of the heat remains under the duff, with smoke being visible in some areas. Another Type 2 Initial Attack (IA) crew from Texas has arrived and is tentatively scheduled to engage on the southwest section of the fire, where steep terrain and significant heat present challenging conditions. The southeast and east sections of the fire remain unstaffed due to steep, inaccessible terrain that poses significant risks to firefighter safety. Fire officials are currently assessing the area for potential targeted bucket drop operations.

Tok River Fire (#289)

Size: 325 acres  Location: 10 miles south of Tok, AK.

Start Date: June 19, 2025 Cause: Lightning Containment: 34%  Total Personnel: 40

Today, a Type 2 Initial Attack (IA) crew from Idaho will be flown into the east side of the river, where bucket drop operations have been ongoing. A support boat will also be positioned to assist with safety needs, as the east side of the fire is extremely boggy and has difficult accessibility. Direct attack efforts continue to make progress on the west side of the river.

Weather – High pressure with light winds expected to create warm and dry conditions through the weekend. Relative humidity will drop around 30%. Max temperatures close to 77° F on the fire line.

Aircraft and Drone Restrictions – A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is still in place over the fire and will continue to be until further notice. The public is asked not to fly any type of aircraft, including drones, near the fire area. Unauthorized drone (UAS) flights pose serious risks to the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations. Aerial firefighting is suspended when unauthorized UAS are in the area, allowing wildfires to grow larger.

Remember: If you fly, we can’t.
