Twelve smokejumpers, two single-engine scooper planes, and a helicopter are working to contain the Shiliak Fire (#374), which is about 25 miles northeast and across the water from Kotzebue.
The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. Thursday. It is estimated at 10 to 15 acres and is burning in black spruce. Firefighters are working to stop the fire’s progress to protect Alaska Native allotments and structures in the area.
