Bonanza Creek Fire (#238): 6,447 acres
Goldstream Creek Fire (#270): 9,586 acres
Personnel: 186
A continuing Red Flag Warning over the fire area Friday caused periods of intense fire behavior. However, a persistent inversion had a moderating effect during the afternoon and into the evening by depriving the fire of fresh air and keeping temperatures cooler near the ground. While there is no Red Flag warning in place today for the Nenana Ridge Complex, hot and dry weather is forecast to continue through the weekend and Red Flag Warnings persist for the majority of the Alaska Interior.
Bonanza Creek Fire (#238) Mad River Hotshots from Northern California and the BLM Alaska Fire Service Midnight Sun Hotshots arrived on the Nenana Ridge Complex Friday and were immediately integrated into operations. Division of Forestry & Fire Protection Pioneer Peak Hotshots successfully completed a firing operation to protect the communications tower and nearby structures threatened north of the Parks Highway near mile marker 325.5. Dozers are building line around the east/northeast side of the Bonanza Fire. Crews also performed fuel mitigation and structure protection along the Tanana River.
Goldstream Creek Fire (#270) The primary objective Friday was for crews to complete structure assessments along the Parks Highway corridor to the west of the existing fire footprint, to build structure protection plans for the area. Crews and equipment almost completed line around the spot fire that crossed the Parks Highway yesterday and anticipate finishing that work today. In addition, contingency lines along the southwest of the fire were completed, and dozer lines were established and strengthened along the east and southeast side of the fire. Unmanned Aerial Systems (aka drones) equipped with infrared cameras were used to conduct reconnaissance in hard to access areas of the fire.
Extreme caution is requested on the Parks Highway for firefighter and public safety. Traffic is moving intermittently with pilot vehicles between Mile Posts 308 and 341. Drivers can expect long delays. Travel through the area should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
Fire personnel are working hard at all hours of the day to protect homes and limit fire spread. Please do your part to ensure they can go back to their families when the job is done. Drive slowly and pay attention for firefighter safety and yours. Check road conditions on the Alaska Department of Transportation website: 511.alaska.gov.
