Staying ready – monitoring fire behavior, protecting values at risk on the Twelvemile Fire

Acreage increased slightly on the Twelvemile Lake Fire (#220) over the 4th of July holiday. No perimeter growth was observed on the Sand Lake Fire (#292). Both fires remain active, with crews continuing to monitor, improve, and prepare point protection efforts around the values at risk.

Behind them, multiple bundles of coiled fire hose are stacked. The scene is bordered by a forest of tall conifer trees, with calm lake water on the left and distant hills under a hazy sky in the background.

  • Twelvemile Lake Fire: 18,121 acres (increase of 24 acres)
  • Sand Lake Fire: 4,821 acres (no change)
  • Total personnel assigned: 63

Fire activity yesterday included scattered heat detections on the northeast flank of the Sand Lake Fire and isolated heat on multiple fingers of the Twelvemile Lake Fire. However, none of the activity resulted in significant fire growth on either fire. An evening recon flight, scheduled to monitor these areas and capture updated perimeters, confirmed minimal fire behavior with isolated single tree torching.

Crews at Healy Lake continued the development of a new helispot to ensure that helicopters can support firefighting efforts with deliveries and crew transport. Tree removal and site preparation were successful, and the location is expected to be operational for use today.

Fire personnel remained busy at all three locations, continuing their work inspecting equipment and maintaining readiness around the values at risk. Deliveries of supplies and backhaul- the return of supplies for refurbishment or disposal- continues at each of the spike camps.

Today will bring mostly sunny skies with haze, and highs near 79°F, RH near 30%. Southeast winds 7–12 mph with gusty, erratic outflow winds possible near isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon.

A pattern shift Sunday will bring cooler temperatures, improved relative humidity, and scattered shower potential by early next week.

Crews remain positioned to respond rapidly should fire behavior increase during peak burning conditions.
