Upper Yukon fires expect a change in weather conditions in the coming days

There are currently four staffed fires burning in the Upper Yukon Fire Management Zone, the Tsukon (#382), Fortymile Fire (#355), Runt Fire (#330), the Obrien (#172), and the Ptarmigan Complex. A total of 214 active wildfires are burning across the State of Alaska as of July 6.

Fortymile Fire (#355) – Located about 25 miles north of Beaver, the fire is at 100% containment. Crews had planned to demobilize from the fire on Sunday, but will continue to remain on the fire until Monday July 7 due to hot dry conditions and to conduct additional mop up operations. Weather was warm and dry today, with no precipitation reaching the fire.

Runt Fire (#330) – Located 3 miles from the Canadian Border, the fire is estimated at 2,913 acres. Fire growth was limited throughout the day on Sunday. Smokejumpers were able to secure a small section of the fire that had slopped over the north side of the line. In addition, a private inholding was secured with planned firing operations, and a 20 foot mop up around the entire perimeter of the fire was achieved.

Tsukon Fire (#382) – Located between Venetie and Fort Yukon, the fire began on July 4 and is estimated at 800 acres. The fire has not crossed the Chandalar River as of July 6. Fire resources were inserted on the ground on July 5 but were pulled out of the area due to extreme fire behavior. A hotshot crew is planned for insertion on Monday to construct sawline and insert hoselays.

The weather pattern is expected to change beginning on Sunday night and into Monday, bringing a wind direction shift, increase risk of thunderstorms, decrease in temperature, and rise in relative humidity. Winds will begin to come out of the west across the interior, a shift from the dominant easterly winds that persisted throughout last week and into the weekend. Although some precipitation is expected to move into the area by Tuesday, the potential for new fires remains high and extremely dry fuels persist.
