Widespread rain across the Upper Yukon slows fire growth

Precipitation has fallen across the Upper Yukon for the last two days. Some areas have received up to an inch of rain during that timeframe, although the accumulation has varied across the zone. Precipitation will begin to slow on Thursday, with a return to dry and warm conditions beginning on Friday.

Tsukon Fire (#382) – The Olympic Wildland Fire Module arrived at the fire on Tuesday. The crew began working to prepare values at risk near the fire, identifying several structures and an Alaska Native allotment. The module will take actions to protect those values including setting up pumps, hoses, sprinklers, and removing fuels adjacent to property and structures in order to reduce potential fire spread and intensity. Continuous light to moderate rain fell over the area until 2:00 p.m., accompanied by high relative humidity and cool temperatures.

The perimeter of the fire remains confined to the west by the Chandalar River, and is estimated at 1500 acres. The Tsukon Fire is located between Venetie and Fort Yukon, it was discovered on July 4 and was caused by lightning

Runt Fire (#330) – The fire continued to receive rain throughout Wednesday. Although rain has moderated fire behavior and assisted with mop up and securing efforts, critically dry fuels make it necessary for ground resources to extinguish heat sources up to 100 feet in from the perimeter. Smokejumpers on the ground have made excellent progress on mop up operations and are expected to put the fire into a monitor status within several days. The fire exhibited minimal fire behavior throughout the day due to minimal winds, consistent precipitation, and low temperatures.
Located along from the Canadian Border, the fire has connected with the Racquet Fire (#331).
