Wetting rains brought a welcome pause in fire activity on the Ninetyeight Fire (#218), allowing firefighters to make strategic progress on containment lines and structure protection. While smoldering continued in some areas, overall fire behavior remained minimal under cooler, wetter conditions.
Firefighters concentrated efforts along the Salcha River corridor, from River Mile 30 to 42, where they cleared debris around structures and reinforced containment lines. These defensive actions aim to reduce fire intensity should conditions dry out, which is anticipated in the coming days. In the north, crews observed minimal fire activity thanks to the rainfall. On the eastern perimeter, new structure protection work has begun, complementing ongoing efforts across the fire zone.
Today’s operations include reinforcing control lines, expanding structure protection, and closely monitoring areas near military assets. Aerial water-dropping support remains on standby for quick response if conditions shift.
While today’s forecast calls for continued higher humidity, cooler temperatures, and possible rain, fire managers are preparing for a return to dry weather, emphasizing a proactive stance to safeguard local communities.
Due to fire crews working in this area, Training Areas 315, 316, 317, and 318 in the Yukon Training Area (YTA) are closed. For public safety and the safety of fire personnel, please avoid this area until further notice.
A TFR is in place over the fire – view more at faa.gov.
