Crews make steady progress as mop-up and patrol continue on Bear Creek and Saint George Fires

Crews continue to make steady progress on both fires. Mop-up and patrol operations are ongoing, supported by infrared flights to detect the remaining heat. Hot, dry weather persists, and fire personnel remain focused on securing the perimeter and preventing flare-ups.

CURRENT STATUS: 

Bear Creek Fire: Crews continued mop-up and securing efforts on the southern and southeastern edges of the fire and have begun some backhauling operations. Gridding work in Bear Creek and Washington areas is expected to be completed within the next couple of days. Crews also finished line construction on the southeast toe of the fire and are expected to complete work tomorrow afternoon.    

Saint George Creek Fire: Mop-up and grid work continued on the east flank near Chicken Creek structures and on the western flank near Gold King Creek. Areial infrared flights utilizing UAS (unmanned aerial systems) were conducted to detect residual heat sources in the western, northern and northeast portions of the fire. Imagery reveals scattered heat throughout.   

WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR 

Hot and dry conditions continue, with temperatures expected in the low 80s with low humidity. Fire activity remains minimal, but interior smoldering persists. Conditions may support increased fire behavior through midweek. For smoke information visit: https://fire.airnow.gov

EVACUATION AND ASSISTANCE INFORMATION 

The State of Alaska is offering Individual and Family Grants (IFG) and Temporary Housing Grants (THG) through the Alaska Individual Assistance Program for those impacted by the fires. Apply between June 27–August 27, 2025. Visit: https://ready.alaska.gov/Recovery/IA Call: 844-445-7131. 

On July 9, the evacuation status for Bear Creek fire was downgraded from SET to READY. This applies to areas from Milepost 258 to the Rex Bridge (Jack Coghill Memorial) including all properties accessed by the Kobe Road, Piano Avenue, Bear Creek Subdivision, June Creek Subdivision, Magpie Avenue, Rock Creek Subdivision, and Ferry Parking Lot. Residents in READY status should remain alert and monitor for updates.  For the Saint George Creek Fire, the Level 3 GO evacuation area was expanded on July 3. No changes have occurred since.
