Fire growth remains minimal on Elephant and Lush fires; crews continue structure protection and mop up

The Elephant Fire (#225), located just north of Eureka, showed minimal fire activity again yesterday. The total fire size has been reduced slightly to 8,941 acres due to updated mapping.

Yesterday, firefighters completed scouting along Slate Creek and finished structure assessments throughout the greater Eureka area. Crews noted a small area of heat on the northern edge of the fire, which they will continue to monitor closely. Today, crews will continue working to secure and mop up the fire edge along the Eureka-Rampart Trail while monitoring around the rest of the fire perimeter.

The Lush Fire (#199), located on the north side of the Yukon River across from Rampart, remains at 26,585 acres in size. The fire continued to show minimal activity throughout the day yesterday. Firefighters remained focused on protecting values at risk.

Today, firefighters are working directly along the northern flank of the fire to prevent spread toward a nearby cluster of Alaska Native Allotments. The Cherokee Interagency Hotshot Crew will be moving from the Elephant Fire to the Lush Fire today to assist with that effort. On the southern and eastern flanks, crews continue mopping up and securing around structures and Alaska Native Allotments.

Favorable weather yesterday allowed for a reconnaissance flight over three additional fires in the area: Fires #195, #200, and #200. No heat or smoke was detected, and those fires remain in monitor status.

Yesterday, 1,564 lightning strikes were detected in the Tanana Fire Management Zone. Overall, fire managers are monitoring 45 other fires in the zone and will staff those fires if conditions warrant.
