Goldrun Complex shows minimal fire activity and mop up beings

Scattered showers have begun and are expected to continue through Tuesday in the Kobuk Valley, where the nine fires of the Goldrun Complex continue to smolder and show little fire activity. The rain has aided crews as they continue to provide protection for Alaska Native allotments, structures and values at risk and begin mopping up the fires. Mop-up is when firefighters put out leftover heat to make sure the edges are cold and the fire won’t spread beyond the already burned area.

The Nuna Fire (#420), while showing minimal fire activity, has burned a total of 14,884 acres. Additional resources have moved to the fire as the BLM Type 2 contract Nulato Hills 2 Crew joins the seven smokejumpers working to protect allotments and other values along the river.

On the Onion Fire (#433),12 smokejumpers continue to engage in direct fire management measures, working close to the fire’s edge. The BLM Type 2 contract K-River 1 Crew have begun the mop up process. This work targets remaining hot spots and deeper-burning fuels to strengthen containment and prevent flare-ups.

The Kaliguricheark Fire (#410), which burned through the Kobuk Fire (#411), is exhibiting minimal fire behavior. Continued growth is expected. The Silver City Hotshots from New Mexico continue to protect sites along the Kobuk River, setting up hose, water pumps, and sprinklers. They are continuing the removal of brush near structures or around allotments, as needed.

The Hunt Fire (#409) and the Tutuksuk Fire (#424) are in monitor status. The Jade (#407), Karet (#408), and Salmon (#423) fires are contained and controlled. They are being monitored.
