Suppression Repair Underway as Rain continues to moderate Himalaya Road and Aggie Creek Fires

Acres: 6,057 (Himalaya Road); 34,837 (Aggie Creek)

Start Date: June 19, 2025

Location: 25 miles North of Fairbanks

Cause: Lightning/natural

Personnel: 81 on Himalaya Road; 21 on Aggie Creek.

Fuels: Black spruce, grass

Containment: 50% on Himalaya Road, 5% on Aggie Creek

Highlights: Due to persistent rainfall, fire activity across both the Himalaya Road and Aggie Creek Fire is being significantly dampened. This has led to crews being strategically pulled back from certain areas as wet and unsafe conditions are present on dozer lines and access roads. While heavy equipment movement and full backhaul operations are currently being restricted by wet and impassable roads, safety remains the priority. On the Himalaya Road Fire, an assessment was completed yesterday to determine rehabilitation needs, and berms are being dismantled by the San Juan Hotshots as part of ongoing suppression repair efforts.

Operations: On the Aggie Creek Fire, resources are dedicated to monitoring and patrolling the fire’s perimeter.  Limited backhaul of equipment is also being conducted by firefighters where conditions permit. Backhaul is the process by which excess equipment, such as hoses and pumps, is retrieved from the fire area. However, the current wet and impassable roads are restricting the extent to which these backhaul efforts can be completed until the roads can dry out for a couple of days. Yesterday, an assessment of the Himalaya Road Fire was completed to determine the specific rehabilitation needs for repairing conditions impacted by fire suppression activities, which includes addressing areas where disturbances were created by heavy equipment or where access was improved for firefighting. Today, on the Himalaya Road Fire portion of the incident, efforts continue with a strong emphasis placed on suppression repair.

Weather: Rain showers are expected, and high temperatures around 62 degrees are anticipated. Light Southwest winds and a 62% chance of wetting rain are predicted.

Closures: Check https://511.alaska.gov/map for road conditions. Olnes Pond Campground remains closed to the public for use by the fire crews.

Evacuations: Level 1 “READY,” evacuations are still in effect. Level 1indicates that a fire is present in the area and to prepare for potential evacuation. Visit https://bit.ly/FNSBevac for current evacuation levels.

Safety: A Temporary Flight Restriction is still in place, but the affected airspace restrictions have been modified; check https://tfr.faa.gov/ for changes. Do not fly drones over the fire area. Unauthorized drone use poses serious risks to firefighter and public safety – If you fly, we can’t.
