DFFP responding to a fire southeast of Talkeetna

UPDATE 7 PM:
Pioneer Peak IHC and Mat Su T2 Crew are engaged on the Mastadon Fire (#131), assisted by engines and aerial suppression resources. Retardant has been effective, and the tanker has been released while helicopters continue bucket work.

Crews are placing hose lays along the left flank of the fire, and Mat Su Crew will continue working late into the evening and staying on site overnight to monitor conditions and engage early in the morning.

At this time, there are no evacuations and no structures are threatened.

The fire is now estimated at 12 acres.

Please stay clear of the fire area while suppression efforts continue. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.


UPDATE 4 PM:
Aerial suppression resources, including helicopters and a retardant tanker, are actively working the Mastadon Fire (#131) near S Mastodon Road in Talkeetna.

The fire is estimated at 5 acres with an 80% active perimeter and flame lengths of 5 to 15 feet. Ground crews, including Mat Su Crew, are enroute. Crews are working to contain the fire with water and retardant lines.

Please stay clear of the fire area while resources are actively working the incident.

UPDATE 2 PM:
On Wednesday, a DFFP engine patrolling the Talkeetna area spotted a column of smoke. Upon investigation, fire personnel found the Mastadon Fire (#131), approximately 1 acre fire burning in grass, hardwoods, and spruce near S Mastodon Rd. A DFFP helicopter is currently on scene doing bucket work. Additionally, there are 3 engines, Pioneer Peak Hotshots, an air tanker and an air attack platform responding. 

This report will be updated as information becomes available.
