Kenai Peninsula smoke and travel alert

May 24, 2014, 3:00 p.m.

(Fairbanks, AK) – Residents and travelers on the Kenai Peninsula are reminded that rapidly changing conditions on the Funny River fire have the potential to disrupt travel on the Sterling Highway and associated side roads.

Drivers are advised to be very alert for fire traffic, including firefighters and firefighting equipment. Drive slowly, safely and with your headlights on.

Please do not block traffic by stopping on the highway to watch fire activity. Find a large, safe, designated turn-out and park well off the roadway.

The Alaska Division of Forestry and the State Forester, in coordination with Federal land managers, have determined that it is necessary to prohibit the use of all open fires and activities which unduly increase the fire danger. This burn closure applies to the entire Kenai Peninsula until further notice.
